8h overall. 4h up and 3,5h down (+ some time on the top). Plan as whole day trip.
Done on 01.01.2020. Conditions: Very cloudy and wet. No visibility for most of the track. Closer to the top we went above the clouds. Definitely worth it.
Fun fact: Whole sky was yellow and glacier was covered with yellow stains due to the Australian bush fires smoke moving across New Zealand that day.
Fun fact 2: We met Kea on the top. Worth spending some time there, looking around and listening for one - they really like to show off once close to you.
Incredible trail. Best of available Franz Joseph glacier views from above (top is at 1303m, higher than helicopter tours). Also - you get 360 degrees views of the whole region. Much better than some of the attractions around (and free), almost no people on the trail, however it requires whole day of intensive walking.
Most of the trail is not pleasant, with (often wet) roots and rocks almost all the way up through the forest. Two nice view points on the glacier on the way. For the last hour you get above the trees and terrain gets more pleasant + all the views are getting only better from there.
