LE VALANGRE 04 (Gistoux)

Au départ de la maison d'hôtes Valangré (Gistoux), cette promenade vous conduit à travers la vallée du Ry du Pré Delcourt vers La Champtaine pour un retour par les hauts de Gistoux (Michelsberg) à travers le bois de Chaumont.

La Champtaine est une ancienne sablière dont l’exploitation a débuté en 1964 pour fournir le sable nécessaire à la construction de l’autoroute Bruxelles-Namur et dont l’activité s’est terminée en 1976. C'est aujourd'hui une réserve naturelle.L'endroit aux falaises élevées présente un intérêt esthétique évident grâce à la présence de plusieurs massifs de grès rubéfiés (couleur rouge due à la présence d'oxydes ferriques) et de falaises éboulées de sable meuble.

Beau retour par le chemin escarpé des Vignes, puis le haut du bois de Chaumont où vous pouvez apercevoir le discret site archéologique du néolithique (Michelsberg) où vécurent les premiers habitants du lieu il y a quelques 4500 ans abrités par un rempart de plus de 700 m de long dont on peut encore apercevoir les traces -- en réalité un simple talus de 2 m de haut et de 10 m de large -- si vous y prêtez bien attention.

Traversée rectiligne par la crête du bois de Chaumont puis redescente vers l'étang de Gistoux et arrivée au Valangré.

From the guesthouse Le Valangré (Gistoux), this hike takes you through the valley of the Ry du Pré Delcourt towards La Champtaine for a return by the highs of Gistoux (Michelsberg) through the wood of Chaumont.

La Champtaine is a former sand pit which began operating in 1964 to supply the sand required for the construction of the Brussels-Namur highway and which stopped operating in 1976. Today it is a natural reserve. The place with high cliffs is of obvious aesthetic interest thanks to the presence of several massifs of rubefied sandstone (red color due to the presence of ferric oxides) and cliffs crumbled with loose sand.

Beautiful return by the steep path of the Vignes, then the top of the wood of Chaumont where you can see the unostentatious archaeological site of the Neolithic (Michelsberg). Here lived the first inhabitants of the place some 4500 years ago sheltered by a rampart of more than 700 m of which one can still see the traces -- basically a 2 m high,10 m wide embankment slope -- ... if you pay attention.

Straight crossing by the crest of the wood of Chaumont then descend towards the pond of Gistoux to return to LeValangré.
