Descripción del itinerario

***** SEE COMMENTS BELOW. TRACK SEEMS NO LONGER AVAILABLE ****
***** I'm just keeping the track here for reference, so you can see what *****

This is a famous mountain at this side of the Dominican Republic but no track had yet been published on Wikiloc.

The track as set out starts at the base station of the cable car.

The first 4km brings you through Puerto Plata. The second 4km takes you up through a thick forest to the summit of mount Isabel.

At the summit you'll find a restaurant with some typical Dominican food and refreshments. After the refreshments, you can take the cable car back to the starting point.

There is also a botanical garden at the top, so if you still have the energy, you can enjoy a walk around the garden.

As the summit is frequently in the clouds in the afternoon, it's recommended to do this hike in the morning, also because of the temperature.

Please note that you can buy the tickets for the cable-car at the summit station.

If you want to avoid the first 4km through Puerto Plata, you can take a taxi from the starting point. One of the larger streets where you go up the mountain is called "Calle Mayor General Antonio Imbert Barrera", but if the taxi driver doesn't know it, you can ask to bring you to the San Felipe prison, which a little bit further away but still very close to the part where you go in the forest and up the mountain.

2018 update: this trail is now overgrown and is NO LONGER USABLE. I suggest getting a guide as they use a different trail which is apparently in much better condition. Check TripAdvisor.

This trail nearly ended my marriage today. There are fallen trees and completely overgrown jungle bush for much of the mountain portion, I estimate 25%. There is a creek that must be traversed and there is no footbridge, we had to build one with a nearby log. There are at least 2 places in the Puerto Plata portion that now have homes /fences built and cannot be traversed as marked. Finally, the jungle is so thick (encroaching on the trail) and there is so much poison ivy and other trees (with sharp plants) that the hiking is too unpleasant to be worth it. We were too stubborn to turn back, but it left us rushing to hurry home and shower to try and avoid a poison ivy reaction, so we didn't really get to enjoy the pavilion at the summit.

After I finish writing this, I'm writing the app admins to request removal of this trail from the app. Do not attempt it.

Path seems to have been cleared recently and didn't give place to confusion. Unfortunately we had to turn back because it was about to rain so i don't know about the creek but i am pretty confident i'll get to the top next time.
    Update will follow...
