Located one hour from Rome, this loop begins at the fountain in Rocca di Cave's center. Head downhill along Via Capranica Prenestina, enjoying mountain views. At Via Colle del Pozzo's end, enter the Anello della Scogliera trail (CAI 503A) through chestnut forests with views of Genazzano and spring blackberry bushes.
The trail meets paved CAI trail 503, a historic trade route connecting Genazzano to Rocca di Cave. Follow it downhill to see a 300-500 year old chestnut grove, originally planted as crops where hillsides were cleared for easier harvesting.
Return uphill toward Rocca di Cave, passing stone walls rich in fossils from when the area was underwater. Look for fossilized coral, oysters, and shells in the fossil reef.
After the fossil section, reach farmland where you can continue to Rocca di Cave or turn left toward Punta all'Olma for spectacular views of Cave, Genazzano, Palestrina, and the surrounding mountains.
Return to CAI trail 503 and back to Rocca di Cave, about one kilometer away. The complete 7-kilometer loop has approximately 270m of elevation gain, varying based on how far you descend on CAI trail 503.
